Concealed Post Base, No External Bracket
The Easy Tie is a hot-dip galvanized post base kit for 4x4 timber posts anchored to concrete. Instead of wrapping a bracket around the outside of the post, the steel knife plate connects inside the base of the timber. This keeps all hardware beneath the post and out of sight.
Compared to a standard post base, this post anchor is a cleaner connection that doesn't compete visually with the structure above it.
How It Goes Together
Welcome to the easiest concealed connector installation ever. The knife plate anchors to your concrete slab and the standoff slides over the top. Cut a slot in the bottom of your timber post. Set the post down over the knife plate. Then drive the two self-drilling dowels straight through one face of the post.
No need to predrill or get perfect alignment - the dowel screws drill thru the knife plate for you and give you all the shear strength needed in one step. Additionally, they're the perfect length to prevent punching through the other side. You can easily plug the holes afterward for a hardware-free face.
What You'll Need
- Circular saw, chainsaw, or other method of cutting the slot in the post bottom
- 3/8 in. concrete anchors — wedge anchors or Titen concrete screws
- Hammer drill and 3/8 in. concrete drill bit to anchor the base plate to the slab
- High torque or impact driver for the self-drilling dowels into the post
- Wood plugs or dowel stock (optional, for a finished appearance)
Raised Off the Concrete
The 1 in. standoff lifts the post bottom off the slab, eliminating your post's end grain contact with concrete. Removing direct moisture will protect your structure from long-term deterioration.
Built for Exterior Use
The entire kit is hot-dip galvanized steel - it's engineered for exterior environments and high-humidity exposure. The galvanized finish resists corrosion at ground level where moisture, soil contact, and weather cycles do the most damage to unprotected hardware. The self-drilling dowels are zinc-plated.
