14×14 Post and Beam Outbuilding

14x12 King Post Pavilion

Please take a look at this 14×14 post and beam outbuilding!  Its footprint would easily fit into most backyards. Its generous plate height of over 9 feet creates a comfortable ceiling height. Ample overhangs provide extra protection from the elements. This design is great for many uses: a freestanding workshop, gardener’s shed, or dining pavilion. You could even add it to your home to create a relaxing porch.  The interior space is 196 square feet, but the ceiling volume makes it feel bigger than that.

You can customize the design with the included roof pitch variation drawings, running from 3:12 to 12:12.  The design uses engineered connectors instead of traditional mortise and tenon joinery. That greatly simplifies cutting and joining the frame.

The drawing set includes plan views, elevations, section drawings, and individual piece drawings. We include 3d renderings with x-ray views to show you all the details and connectors to help you visualize and cut the frame. There is a  full timber list, with the quantity and dimensions listed, to make your timber purchase painless. We provide a  detailed fastener schedule, so there is no guesswork involved.

The drawings are formatted in PDF for instant download. They are sized at 8 ½” x 11” for easy printing at home.

  1. What are the outside of post to post measurements? Or what is the square foot of floor space? Thanks

  2. We are looking for plans we can modify to be taller (12′ or so) to the base of the plate, and longer. Is this something we could modify? Add length to posts and add a middle bent? thank you!

  3. Katrina Williams

Katie, have you seen our 14×18 King Post Plan? If you want something longer than that you could always add a bent to the 14×14 to create 14×26 or so. As far as post height, you can always make them longer to create a taller plate height. We recommend consulting an engineer when making changes such as that.

  4. Can you give me an approximate amount (or range) of what the materials cost would be to build this plan with a steel roof?

  5. What is the height to bottom of front and rear cross beams? Also, with 3/12 roof pitch what is the ridge height? Is this designed to support a tongue and groove wood ceiling topped by felt and shingles? Thanks.

  6. Katrina Williams

Roger the height to the bottom of the cross beams is 8′-0″. The height to the ridge at a 3:12 pitch is approximately 12′-0″. And yes, t&g ceiling with felt and shingles is a common way to finish this out.

Can this be modified to a 14 wide by 20 long design? What weight should I allow for if placing this on an existing deck?

  8. Hi,
I bought this plan. I have to submit it for permit.
Do you know if it will pass for snowload of 1.5 KPA (21 PSF) We’re in Hamilton Ontario Canada.

Also, is there a hardware kit I can purchase from Canada?

    Thank you!
    A

  9. I will followup with you today via email. The kit is available in Canada and can be shipped via a Canadian address. You should be ok with that snowload but we can run that through an engineer to have it certified.

  10. What size timbers is this made out of? Having problems sourcing anything over 8×8 locally. Can you share the list of timbers?

  11. Katrina Williams

You can see the timber sizes on the specifications tab of the plan. We can tell you this plan uses 1536.0 board feet.
