Typical of all monitor barn plans, this 40x42 monitor barn house plan has a large center aisle with shed wings on both sides, and a second level above the center aisle. If you are wanting a large structure with great character and functionality, look no further than this one! This is designed to fit on a 40x42 foundation after the addition of 5 1/2" Studs, and 5/8" furring strips behind the posts for drywall to be installed. You may choose to leave one of the wings open for a comfortable porch or enclose the entire structure. There is plenty of mortise & tenon, spline and scarf joinery for you to show off your skills!
The raw dimensions from outside to outside of the posts are 38’-11 ¾” x 40’-11 ¾”. With cladding, the square footage is approximately 1680 for the first floor and 650 on the second level. The roof pitches are 8:12 for the center aisle, and 4:12 on the shed wings. The height to top of the center aisle rafters is 24’-10”. The height to the top of shed rafters is 13’-3”. The top of the center aisle rafters stand at 19’-7”, and the height to top of shed plate is 9’-6”. This plan utilizes 9009.3 board feet.

Can this be built so as to allow a generous eave to allow a full wrap with strawbales?

Have you ever put a frame like this on a pier foundation? I imagine there would just be a framed floor on piers that line up with the verticle Timbers.
That is correct. You can either have a timbered floor system or a conventional one.
What would be in the house kit that would not be in the barn Kit of the same size? SIPs? I would be interested to know how the price would change for same kit for just a 40×42 monitor barn. Many thanks.
