Schaefer Cypress Party Pavilion

When Mike Schaefer completed a week-long timber framing workshop at CSU, he knew he wanted to build something substantial. After practicing on Timber Frame HQ’s swing set plan, he set his sights on a backyard party pavilion using TFHQ’s 20×20′ King Post with Shed Roof design—modified to 20×25′ for his Pottsboro, Texas property.

From Plan to Pavilion

Schaefer invested about $11,000 in fresh-cut Louisiana cypress and dove into the 18-month part-time build. The Timber Frame HQ plan provided the structural foundation, while Brice offered guidance throughout the process. “I had plenty of advice from Brice along the way,” Schaefer notes—highlighting the ongoing support that comes with TFHQ plans.

What started as a hand-tool project quickly evolved. “Along the way I discovered the need for a lot of bigger tools and a few replacement timbers as the lessons accumulated,” he admits. This honest assessment reflects the real learning curve of timber framing.

Community Build with Expert Backup

The project became a true family effort, with wife Ellen documenting the build through photography, sons Chris and David providing muscle, and friends and neighbors pitching in. For the critical final fitting and raising, Schaefer brought in Art Appelgren of Twisted Timber Frame to ensure everything came together properly.

The finished structure features a 2×6 tongue-and-groove ceiling and standing seam metal roof—creating a beautiful 500-square-foot outdoor entertainment space.

The Honest Truth About DIY Timber Framing

Schaefer’s emotional journey says it all: “Went full cycle from ‘I can do anything’ to ‘I may be in over my head’ to ‘What was I thinking’ to ‘I’m sure glad I did this!'”

His advice? Start with smaller TFHQ projects like sawhorses and swing sets before tackling a major frame. Budget for tools beyond just timber costs. And don’t hesitate to bring in professional help for the raising.

Now the Schaefer Party Pavilion hosts gatherings in Texas, proving that Timber Frame HQ plans can take DIY builders from workshop students to proud pavilion owners.
