Holden Norfolk Pine Milking Shed

Holden Norfolk Pine Milking Shed

This timber frame cow bale and milking shed was built by Wesley Holden of WH Construction Services on Lord Howe Island, New South Wales, Australia. Designed by Timber Frame HQ, the project is based on the 20×20 king post frame, adapted to suit its agricultural use and island setting. The frame was constructed using Norfolk pine, a material well suited to local conditions and availability.

The king post layout provides a strong, open interior well suited for livestock and milking operations, allowing clear spans and straightforward circulation within the structure. While rooted in a standard frame design, the building reflects practical modifications to meet the functional needs of a working farm environment.

Photographed by Wesley Holden, the completed frame demonstrates how a traditional timber framing system can be successfully applied to utilitarian farm structures, maintaining both structural integrity and craftsmanship while serving a demanding, everyday purpose.
