Locally-Sourced Douglas Fir Bank Home in Reno, Nevada
When owner-builder Sean Barrett set out to create a 24'x48' timber-framed bank home in Reno, Nevada, he knew the project demanded both traditional craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Partnering with Timber Frame HQ for the design phase, Barrett brought his vision to life through a collaboration that showcased the beauty of locally-sourced materials and expert timber framing.
A California Craftsman Meets Nevada Mountains
The timber cutting and fabrication was entrusted to Mark Van Haltern of Van Haltern Joinery & Design, based in Grass Valley, California. Van Haltern's expertise in traditional joinery methods ensured that every mortise and tenon joint would be cut to precision, creating a structure that honors centuries-old timber framing techniques.
All Douglas Fir, All Local
One of the project's defining features is its commitment to locally-sourced materials. Every timber in the 1,728 square foot structure came from Douglas Fir harvested in the region—a wood species prized for its strength, natural beauty, and excellent dimensional stability. The decision to source locally not only reduced the project's environmental footprint but also connected the home to the forests and landscape of the Sierra Nevada region.
Engineering Excellence
To ensure the timber frame met modern building codes and structural requirements, Fire Tower Engineered Timber provided the engineering expertise. This combination of traditional timber framing methods with contemporary engineering analysis represents the best of both worlds—timeless craftsmanship backed by modern structural validation.
The result is a stunning bank home that seamlessly integrates into Reno's high-desert environment while celebrating the natural character of Douglas Fir and the enduring appeal of timber frame construction.
