The design of this 24x36 gambrel barn home plan will maximize headroom on your second floor! The frame gets its name from the characteristic dual roof pitches. Along with ample headroom down the center, you will be able to have plenty of storage in the space outside of the loft posts. There is a large dormer on the side to bring lots of light into the second level. The queen post trusses will allow you to have plenty of windows on the gambrel ends. You can use the shed roof area along the other side of the ground level as a porch, or enclose it for more square footage.
Square footages, finished as noted above:
- Main floor 864 sq ft
- Loft approx. 315 sq ft
- Porch approx. 435 sq ft.
The measurements from outside to outside of the main body posts are 34’-11 ¾” x 22-11 ¾”. This is intended to accommodate finishing with 5 1/2" studs and 5/8" furring strips behind the posts. There is a 5/8" gap for drywall to be installed after the frame is put up and the walls are installed. The porch shed projects a further 12-6 ⅛”. The loft dimensions to outside of the posts are 13 -6 ¾” x 23’-4 ⅝”.
The height to the top of the ridge is 22’-8 11/16”; to top plate is 11’-7 11/16”, to girt is 9’-4 ¾”. The roof pitch for the higher part of the gambrel is 6:12; the lower portion is 20:12. The shed roof pitch is 2.5:12.

This frame is SO good looking!
I really would like to build one, but the building code in my area sets a maximum height of 21′ 4″ so I would either have to make a lower first floor, or reduce the gambrel both of which would disturb the nice proportions of the building.
Could you program make it 5 or 10% smaller? that way it would still be possible to build according to plans instead of manually doing it and risking to mess up several times.

is the total footprint 24×36? or is that the footprint of the gambrel barn excluding the shed roof?
That plan come in two versions: one to accept your wall cladding and fit on a 24×36 foundation, and one without cladding. The one without measures 24’x36′ from outside to outside of the posts PLUS 12′ for the shed area. The one designed for cladding measures 22′-11 3/4″ x 34′-11 3/4″ outside of the posts PLUS 12′-6 1/8″ for the shed.
