Is there a general rule of thumb for sizing beams, or a guide book to reference size and spacing of beams. I realize many factors come into play in the calculations, not just spacing and size but species as well. There are buildings that have been standing for centuries, long before a code enforcement officer insisted an engineer stamp your plans. If there is some sort of reference available, I would love to get my hands on it!

There is not a chart that has the sizing for beams.  I have been after the engineers for years to put out one out but have met with failure.  There are a couple of timber of beam calculator, one is at http://www.forestryforum.com/members/donp/logbeamcalc.htm.
